26th December 2018 Hiking - Walking: National Trust at Formby, Liverpool Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny periods Max Speed: Distance Covered: 3 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Wednesday 26th December - walk ***** – National Trust at Formby, Liverpool – sunny periods. After a lovely Christmas Day watching Arlo opening his presents including his lovely wooden balance bike which is a fraction too big at the moment and a delicious dinner, we woke on Boxing day with some exercise in mind. So after breakfast we drove the short distance to the National Trust site of Formby – ‘The ever-changing coast’ – a capricious landscape, sculpted by wind and squeezed by surging tides, where shifting sands create an ever changing dune landscape, actively building and moving inland, a desirable natural process creating rolling golden whale back forms against a pine-green backdrop of dune plantations’ or so the brochure says:) and it was just along the coast from the wonderful beach statues at Crosby. With two National Trust members one in each car, we could park for free at the end of Lifeboat Road. Arriving at 12.30, it was fairly busy with people enjoying a Boxing Day Stroll:) We all set off walking, including Arlo in his little blue dinosaur wellies we bought on his last visit to Felixstowe. We all headed off in search of the red squirrels which this woodland is famous for, not for a minute expecting to see any! We had a map so headed towards Squirrel wood with the sea and dunes to the left and pine woods to the right past ponds with ducks but no squirrels yet:( Arlo walked for ages, holding Mag’s hand, always with stick in hand prodding the sand or patting the trees, he is just a joy to be with at the moment! Then after about a mile his legs tiring Hannah put him in the backpack and then just by the Asparagus Fields hawk-eye Hannah spotted our first Red squirrel in a small plantation of young pine trees. We stopped while I changed to my expensive Fuji 100-400 lens and I managed to get a few pics just to prove we had seen one. Not great as it was a long way away but I was pleased non the less as we haven’t seen one for years! Victoria Pine Wood was particularly pretty and we soon found the NT information hut and a coffee Kiosk much to the relief from other members of the group! After their caffeine boost we went into Squirrel Wood and were soon in the middle of the most Red Squirrels I have ever seen! I got the best squirrel pic I have ever taken with the big lens but these squirrels were used to visitors just like the grey ones in Christchurch park in Ipswich and I had to change to the wide angle as the squirrels were too close! Someone had dropped a load of peanuts in their shells to feed the little buggers which was why they were everywhere! Despite loads of people about the squirrels didn’t mind. In the end, after picking up a handful of nuts I sat just in the trees attracting them really close, until eventually they were feeding out of my hand - just amazing! We then headed through the dunes down to the beach as the sun was setting over the sea, just beautiful. We walked along the beach collecting a little coal turning inland at the Lifeguard Station and back to the car after a three hour walk covering three miles – what a top afternoon:) Photo Gallery Here National Trust,Formby Here |
